An Ecollaborations with Animals

Collaboration, as a method of working in art,is based on social psychology,and it gives results that are impossible for the artist who works alone. According to Komar&Melamid, conceptual art must draw attention to the method by which a particular work of art comes into being, more than the traditional hierarchy of form.
Collaboration, whether with animals or with masses of people /as in the artists' painting-by-poll project, The Most Wanted Painting/ ensures that the method of productionwill be included in the final story, or aura,of the work of art. The additional concept behind this collaboration with other species is that the artist can access a new kind ''instinctual creativity'', while raising global awareness about ecological threats to our shared natural habitat.
Komar&Melamid have been working as co-authors since 1965, and from time to time they have extended their partbership to include animals in the United States, Russia, Thailand .The earliest example of this kind of work dates back to 1978, when they taugth Tranda /a Russian dog/ to draw in arealistic style that satirized the methods of the totalitarian drawing classes.
Meanwhile,while looking through photographs of Moscow of their childhood, in 1998 Komar&Melamid conceinved of their current collaboration-in-progress, Moscow though the Eyes of Mikki. Mikki is the nickname of Viktor, a very gifted 7-year old chimpanzee born in the Soviet Union. Mikki alredy enjoys being photographed as one of the stars of the Moscow Circus. Komar&Melamid's concept is to assist Mikki in learning to operate a camera and videorecorder in order to collaborate with the artists. Mikki will record certain areas of Old Moscow that resonate wiht the artists childhood nostalgia, as well a trip to the Zoo, and other attractions of contemporary life in Moscow. Mikki's presence behind the camera will magnify what is generally considered ''instinctual'' or ''spontaneous '' in these methods of visual representation.
In September 1998 this project was exhibited in the Gallery Karenina in Vienna .
After 9 years this project will be shown in the Gallery Karenina in Moscow from 17 May till 20 July 2007.
